Sunday, 12.30am

After Melissa Rowe was discovered, Boden immediately reported the situation to DCI Knight on the phone. But it was not her expectation that the boss would turn up in person.

She glances at Foley as the DCI gets out of the back of a squad car.

‘The money launderer’s wife?’ he says wryly.

Boden nods. ‘She’s got a lot to prove. I’m guessing that’s why she’s here.’

Knight sees her and heads straight for them.

‘Jo,’ she says. ‘Quite a situation we have here.’

Boden nods. ‘This is DI Foley, boss. Head of the Minister’s close protection team.’

Rachel Knight gives him a tepid smile. ‘Our patch, our case, Inspector,’ she says.

‘Oh absolutely,’ says Foley. ‘I’m just waiting to take the Minister back to London.’

‘And I gather the victim is a friend of his,’ says Knight.

‘Well, yes. Sort of,’ says Boden.

‘Have you got an update on her?’

‘Not yet,’ says Boden. ‘But I’ve sent DC Chakravorty to the hospital in case she regains consciousness.’

‘Do we need armed officers there to protect the victim?’ says Knight. ‘Could an attack on the Minister’s friend relate to the ongoing threat against him?’

‘I don’t know, boss,’ says Boden.

She’s been on her feet and on duty since seven am. She’s sweated several buckets, changed her shirt twice, caught a drug dealer, and reconnected with the man she’s been avoiding for the last two years, because she suspects he may be in love with her. And now she’s got Rachel Knight on her back.

‘The threat has been downgraded,’ says Foley.

‘Doesn’t mean we should ignore it,’ says Knight. ‘Okay, you’ve done a long shift, Jo. But it’s a good job I’m here.’ She gets out her phone. ‘Is the scene properly cordoned?’

Boden nods. ‘Yes. And we’ve got a CSM and a forensics team on the way.’

Knight turns away to make a call.

Boden and Foley exchange looks. ‘She’s a delight,’ he whispers.

‘You’re headed back to London then?’ says Boden.

‘Yeah, as soon as his nibs gets his stuff together.’

‘It’s been good to see you again.’

He shrugs. It’s an awkward moment. ‘She should let you go home,’ he says. ‘You’re knackered.’

‘We’re also short-handed. So I’m not holding my breath,’ says Boden.

Knight ends her call and turns back towards them. ‘Right,’ she says. ‘That’s sorted. We need to start taking witness statements.’

‘I’ve got DC Mackie collecting the names and details of all the attendees at the reunion, so we can follow up,’ says Boden.

‘And I’ve got a couple of my lads giving him a hand,’ says Foley. ‘Just until we’re off.’

Rachel Knight stares at Foley. ‘Do you consider it a security risk for the Minister to remain here?’ she says.

‘Well, it depends what you mean,’ says Foley. ‘The advice to him was not to come. We had a red alert earlier. Now it’s amber.’

‘Yes, but his friend has been attacked, and is in a critical condition. So we need to interview him. Preferably tonight. Something has happened here. We need to understand what. I want to know if I’m looking for a terrorist, or someone attending this reunion.’

Foley raises his eyebrows.
